July 11, 1977 – President Jimmy Carter presents the Presidential Medal of Freedom – posthumously awarded to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – to Coretta Scott King and Dr. M.L. King, Sr.  The medal  is the nation’s highest civilian honor.
