April 21, 1973 – The Tony Orlando and Dawn song, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree,” rises to #1 on the U.S. pop charts.  Beyond being a huge hit for the group, the song inspired a new tradition in the US as a way to recognize missed loved ones returning home.
