September 11 marked the day that America was attacked, with the loss of 2,999 lives attributed to date as a tragic result.

But September 11 historically had more uplifting events as well. Here are a few:
1609 – Explorer Henry Hudson sailed into New York harbor and discovered Manhattan Island and the Hudson River.

1847 – “Oh, Susannah” was sung in public for the first time. Stephen Foster sold the rights to the song for a bottle of whiskey.

1926 – In Honolulu Harbor, Hawaii, the Aloha Tower was dedicated.

1951 – Florence Chadwick became the first woman to swim the English Channel from both directions.

1967 – The Carol Burnett Show premiered on CBS.

1967 – “All You Need Is Love” by the Beatles was certified as a million seller.

1971 – The animated “The Jackson Five” TV series debuted on ABC.

1974 – “Little House On The Prairie” made its television debut.

In 2011, Dutch photographer Charlotte Dumas embarked on a quest to locate the last surviving 9/11 search and rescue dogs who had worked so tirelessly ten years earlier. Retrieved is a collection of their portraits, a moving tribute to these heroic dogs and their handlers.
