February 26, 1978 – Vladimir Horowitz marked the 50th anniversary of his U.S. debut with a performance at the White House.
February 16, 1848 – Eighteen months before his death from tuberculosis at the age of 39, Frédéric Chopin gave his final public performance in his adopted city of Paris. After fleeing his native Poland amid the political unrest of the 1830s, he spent the rest of his life amid the high society of France.
Glenn Herbert Gould was born on this day in 1932 and before he died at the age of 50, he became the best-known and most celebrated classical pianists of the 20th century.
